Rip DVD Movies To Your Apple Device
This is a basic overview of Handbrake, an open-source, GPL-licensed, multiplatform, multithreaded video transcoder, available for Mac OS X, Linux and Windows.
In this tutorial, we will be using HandBrake to rip a movie from a DVD, and at the same time encode the film to work on your iPod, iPhone, or iPad.
To start, you’ll need to download HandBrake.
To download HandBrake for your version of Mac OS X (or Windows), visit their download page.
1. Insert the DVD
Put the DVD you wish to rip into your disk drive. If DVD Player opens up, quit it.
2. Open HandBrake
Drag the HandBreak application to your Applications folder to install. Then double click the icon to open. Upon opening, an “Open” window will appear. Select the DVD you have inserted in the sidebar, and click “Open”. Don’t worry if there are other files inside the DVD, HandBrake will sort that all out.
3. Select The Files To Rip
Handbrake will then scan all of the “titles” on the DVD. When ripping a movie, be sure that all of the chapters are selected (in this case, 1 through 38), but if you’re ripping a season of television episodes, you can just select the episode you want.
4. Select the Preset
Click “Toggle Presets” in the toolbar to toggle a bar of presets (if they’re not already out by default), and select the preset for your particular device:
5. Add to Queue and Rip
You can look through all the settings of the preset if you’re curious or if you want to tweak anything, but it should work perfectly fine without tweaking. Once you’re ready to rip, click the “Add to Queue” button, and then “Start”.
The bottom of the window should then display a progress bar, and give you an estimated time of completion.
6. Add to iTunes and Sync
Open up iTunes. Locate the .m4v or .mp4 file that Handbrake has generated and either drag it into your library or click to File -> Add to Library and find your encoded file. Plug in your Apple device and sync the file to watch on the go!

I would like to copy my DVDs to my computer and then burn them onto a blank disc for watching in a dvd player. Is handbrake capable? How do i do it, if you don’t mind me asking? If handbrake isn’t capable do you have a recommended program?
I would actually recommend using Disk Utility, which comes with your Mac in the Utilities folder within your Applications folder. You can save the DVD as a disk image, and then insert a blank disk, and burn the disk image to that DVD.
